June 2nd: ROCK!
Last night we had our fabulous concert called ROCK! All of our parents were there, and we think they had a great time.
We worked extremely hard on preparing the show and in the end it was awesome. We think we all did very well. All of us had a great time even though it was hard and some of us had sore throats afterwards.
We would like to thank the Music teachers for choosing such a fun show to perform for our concert. Overall we had a lot of fun and we hope we'll do another awesome concert next year.

Grandparents' Day - May 21st
Today we celebrated Grandparents' Day at school. Grandparents' Day is a day when grandparents come to school to find out what their grandchildren have been doing in class.
At first, our grandparents went to the gym to listen to the gold medal public speeches and the Choir. After, they came to our classroom and we asked them some questions about when they were 10 or 11 years old. We also gave them our art cards we made in class.
It was so much fun learning about our roots and meeting our classmates' grandparents. Some kids did not have their grandparents at school today but they got to share with someone else. We loved spending time with all the grandparents.

Mayor Gardner's Visit - May 20th
Now that we're coming to the end of our Canadian Government unit, we were pleased to have a visit with Mayor Gardner of Squamish today. Lucky for us, Mayor Gardner is Carson's uncle. We thought his visit was great because we learned a lot of things about municipal government.
We thought that Mayor Gardner explained his job well and he told us how he ran for election and ended up becoming Mayor. He was very kind and took time to answer every question. He said that the build up to the Olympics was one of his largest projects to deal with.
We wish that we had more time to visit with him. This experience was amazing, and we were so fortunate to be able to meet a mayor in person.

Shane Peacock Author Talk - May 6th
Today the Grade 5 Class travelled to Kay Meek to attend the Booktopia event featuring Canadian author Shane Peacock. Some of us have read some of the books in his boy Sherlock Holmes series and we thought he was a good author and couldn't wait to attend his talk today. We were not let down; he was amazing! 
The author inspired us to read more books. Shane told us about his childhood and how when he was younger he really wanted to become a hockey player and that he didn't really like reading books. He later realized that he liked listening to his dad's nightly bedtime stories. He also told us that you can't just go home and write a book that will be published. He told us that aspiring authors need to work very hard and spend many hours and years in order to write one book.
He shared with us the information about the book he is working on right now, the fifth one in the boy Sherlock Holmes series. He also said that he likes odd things rather than normal things, and that he always tries to create some different characters in his books.
We wish that we could have stayed longer and heard more about his books and how he writes them. This author visit was awesome and many of us look forward to reading the boy Sherlock Holmes series now!

Grade 5 Camp - April 28th-30th
On April 28th, the Grade 5s set sail on their big yellow busses to Camp Squeah. We were all so excited when we arrived and our busses rolled up to the Lodge.
We ate our meals in the Lodge and lined up outside the Lodge before each activity. We thought the cabins were awesome! They consisted of four bunk beds, a desk, two clothing poles, and each cabin even had a deck out front.
THE FOOD WAS AMAZING and the camp staff were SUPER nice! These are not the only amazing things about camp. There were also eight terrific activities. You could do a guided hike, soapstone, pottery, climbing wall, archery, nature studies, group initiatives, and the low ropes.
Overall our camp experience was GREAT and we hope we may get to go back soon!

Science Fair Night - April 15th
Last night we hosted our Grade 5 Science Fair event. Everybody was excited to show off their hard work.
So many parents and siblings came to this event, and they were keen to ask questions. At first, some of us were a bit nervous because this was our first Science Fair ever and we weren't exactly sure what was going to happen once all the parents arrived.
We all had fun talking to the parents but there were so many of them that some of us ended up with sore throats! Science Fair Night was definitely fun but it got a bit boring at times because we seemed to be saying the same things over and over.
We thought that it was awesome to have our parents come in to examine our final projects and take a look at the other classes' projects, too.
We all agree that Science Fair is a great experience, and we can't wait to do another experiment next year in Grade 6!

Pink Shirt Day - April 14th
Today we wore pink shirts to school. We did this because a student in Nova Scotia wore a pink shirt to school one day and he was bullied and called names by some other students. A group of older students decided to stand up for this student and asked everybody else to wear pink shirts to school on the following day. 
Class 5C made a photo montage about property abuse, and it was shown at today's assembly along with the other Grade 5 classes' contributions. Most of the assembly was dedicated to raising awareness about bullying and finding ways to make our student relationships stronger.
We enjoyed wearing our pink shirts. Some other people wore pink glasses, pink baseball caps, and pink scarves.

Grade 5 Legacy - April 13th & 14th
Legacy is a program that the Grade 5s have been doing for some time. Parents drop off their recyclable plastic bottles, juice boxes and pop cans, and we get money for these items so that we can buy supplies for the school. We have purchased many great items with the money raised through Legacy including benches for outside our classrooms, digital cameras for each Homeroom class, easels and stands, sports equipment, and a document camera.
This week's Legacy was hard work and figuratively back-breaking! It was fun emptying bags and bags of bottles and cans.
It was tiring because we had to wake up early each morning and had to bend down many times while we sorted the recyclables. Even though it was tiring it was worthwhile.
Overall, this week's Legacy experience was superb, and we were glad that we could help the planet!Posted by: Alex G., Amber & Jesse
Vancouver Art Gallery Field Trip - April 12th
Today Classes 5C and 5W went to the Vancouver Art Gallery to see The Mechanics of Man and Visceral Bodies exhibits. The 34 original pen and ink sketches of the human body showcased Leonardo da Vinci's work from 500 years ago. We also saw contemporary artwork of the human body. The two exhibits were very different but they were both amazing! When we looked at Leonardo's sketches they were anatomically correct. But when we looked at the contemporary artists' work, it was more abstract. There were even some sculptures that everyone saw as something different from the person next to them!
We had very experienced and knowledgeable docents who guided us through the exhibits. Overall our trip was a very memorable experience!!
